Sewing machines can be maintained and repaired with little or no technical knowledge. They require the basic maintenance of cleaning, oiling, and lubricating. When trouble confronts you, the first thing you do is clean it first before you oil or disassemble it.
After cleaning then you want to oil it using a clear white oil especially designed for sewing machines; not something you find out in the garage.
Sewing machines have to be approached the same way you approach a computer software glitch, with “patience”. Remain calm and by all means don’t panic and let your frustration get in the way of your good sense.
Once you have completed cleaning and oiling, here are a few tips to follow in order to keep your equipment operating in proper order:
• Tension, when you change from one fabric to another, the tension may have to be re-adjusted.
• Bobbin, could be improperly wound, always start with an empty bobbin and don’t wind it so full. Always wind it evenly across and in level layers and never mix different sized of thread.
• Needle, most sewing machine repairs are simply that the needle was put in backwards; this can easily happen to the experts!
• Machine threading, each machine has it’s own threading sequence and one missed step is a bust; take out the thread and start over, this may be all that is wrong.
These tips can save you a trip and the expense of taking your sewing machine to a repair shop and supporting their overhead.
